CleanShield HEPA 550: an air scrubber for repair work

The AlorAir CleanShield HEPA 550 captures airborne dust and fine particles during renovation and restoration work. Its fan draws air through replaceable filters and returns it to the room.

It has variable speed and connections for ducting. A removable panel gives access to the filters. The ten-year warranty covers the housing; other parts have shorter coverage. [1] [3]

01 · The job

Airborne dust and wet materials need different equipment

A leak can leave several jobs to tackle. Wet materials need drying, while removing damaged finishes can release dust. The CleanShield HEPA 550 filters air. A dehumidifier removes water vapor; our air scrubber vs dehumidifier guide explains the difference.

An air cleaner can also capture some airborne mold spores. Mold growing on a surface and the moisture feeding it still need to be addressed. EPA distinguishes air cleaning from fixing a mold problem in the home. [6]

Filters behind the front panel

Four latches hold the panel in place. A carrying handle sits on top; AlorAir lists the weight as 39.6 lb, about 18 kg. [2] [3]

02 · Filtration

Three stages, two replaceable filters

The store describes three-stage filtration. The manual identifies two replaceable filters: a prefilter and a combined HEPA/carbon filter. The three stages refer to the filtering materials, rather than three separate cartridges. [1] [3]

Filter sequence shown in the manual. Air then leaves through the outlet. [3]

The prefilter captures larger particles. HEPA handles fine particles, while activated carbon adsorbs certain gases and odors. EPA notes that gas removal needs a suitable sorbent and depends partly on how much material the filter contains. Carbon life also depends on the pollutants it encounters. [1] [6]

99.5% and 99.97% in the documents

TheDryAir claims 99.5% for particles larger than 0.3 microns. AlorAir's specification gives 99.5% in the text and 99.97% in a graphic. The replacement-filter listing claims 99.97% at 0.3 microns. These figures conflict. I did not find a test report for the supplied filter or complete unit in the documents reviewed. [1] [4] [5]

03 · Specifications

Airflow ratings and a conflicting manual

The current AlorAir and TheDryAir listings give an adjustable range of 270-550 CFM, or cubic feet per minute. This describes the volume of air passing through the unit each minute. [1] [2]

Airflow270-550CFM, adjustable

Manufacturer specifications, not our own measurements. [2]

Page 3 of the manual lists 750 CFM and 3 A. Those values differ from the current product listings and specification sheet. If your job requires a particular airflow, ask the seller to confirm the rating of the unit being supplied. [3] [4]

AlorAir also lists noise below 65 dBA, without specifying the measurement distance or speed setting. A useful noise comparison would need those conditions to match. [2]

04 · Operation

A speed dial and two airflow arrangements

A dial adjusts the fan speed. The panel also has a filter-change light and GFCI-protected auxiliary outlets. Remove the black intake cover before running the unit. TheDryAir's package does not include ducting. [1] [4]

Air returns to the room

In ordinary recirculating use, the unit draws in room air, filters it and releases it back into the room.

Air leaves the work zone

Creating negative pressure requires exhausting air beyond an isolated work zone and monitoring the pressure. [7]

The setup must account for adjoining spaces and open-combustion equipment: exhaust can cause backdrafting. The manual specifically warns about this risk. A qualified remediation professional should plan containment and exhaust arrangements for mold removal. [3] [7]

05 · Consumables

Check the prefilter before each job

Check whether the prefilter is clogged before starting work. When the filter-change light comes on, the manual calls for replacing the HEPA/carbon filter. After remediation jobs, it calls for replacing both filters and cleaning the unit between sites. Unplug the machine before servicing it and use protective equipment when handling contaminated filters. [3]

AlorAir sells a replacement HEPA/activated-carbon filter for the CleanShield 550. Check model compatibility before ordering. Include replacement filters when comparing ownership costs. [5]

06 · Warranty

Ten years covers the housing

The manual divides coverage into periods. The first six months cover parts and labor, including shipment of replacement parts or a unit. Parts and labor coverage continues through the first year, but the customer pays shipping back to the manufacturer. The ten-year term applies to the polyethylene housing. [3]

The exclusions mention damage from use at humidity of 75% or above. Clarify this clause with the seller if you are buying for water-damage work. The manual does not explain how that cause of damage is assessed. [3]

TheDryAir's advertised six-year warranty applies to dehumidifiers. For other products, its warranty page refers buyers to the relevant manual. [8]

07 · Buying

What to confirm before ordering

The CleanShield 550 offers adjustable airflow and accessible filters for airborne dust during repair work. Where a job requires verified filtration efficiency or a specified airflow, ask for documentation confirming those ratings.

Ask the seller to identify the supplied filter, confirm the unit's specifications and explain warranty coverage for damp work sites. Check replacement-filter costs and delivery times too. For drying after a leak, our water-damage equipment guide explains the roles of the different machines.
