Dehumidifier Drain Hose Setup: What Works in Florida
A dehumidifier drain hose setup comes down to one measurement: the drain port sits a couple of inches off the floor. Anything higher is out of reach for gravity, and in a Florida home almost everything is higher, including the sink and the rim of the tub. Here is where the water actually goes, what the state building code says about it, and where the whole arrangement usually springs a leak.
The problem is head height, not the hose
Any dehumidifier drain hose setup works only if the entire run falls. The code calls for a minimum slope of 1/8 inch per foot, which is 1%; tradespeople recommend 1/4 inch per foot to leave margin.
Now the heights. The port on the machine is a couple of inches off the floor. A sink trap sits around 20 inches up. A tub rim is higher again. A laundry standpipe is set 18 to 30 inches above its own trap.
So water will not run from a floor-standing unit into a sink. Either the machine goes up above the trap, or a pump does the lifting. In our review cohort, sinks and tubs are the most frequently mentioned destinations, 6.0% against 1.1% of other reviews, but those are pump setups. The people who tried it on gravity show up in a different line: “won’t drain” and “had to raise it” appear in 0.9% against 0.1%.
Where the water can actually go in a Florida home
Shower pan. A receptor at floor level, already trapped and vented. Raise the machine slightly and the water runs. Keep the end of the hose above the drain, never sitting in water.
Laundry standpipe. The code names a standpipe, a utility sink and a laundry sink as acceptable receptors for condensate. What matters is the low point of the standpipe, not the top of the pipe. One practitioner caution: a washing machine discharges under pressure, so a check valve or a buffer length of pipe keeps it from pushing water back at you.
Out through the wall. The code permits discharge to grade outdoors, with the limit described below.
A pump. For when nothing sits lower than the port, which is the common case.
What the Florida code says
No direct connection. FBC-P 314.2.1.1: a condensate drain shall not connect directly to any drainage, waste or vent pipe. Discharge is allowed only into listed receptors, and the ones that actually exist in Florida housing are the shower pan, the laundry standpipe and a utility sink.
An air gap is required. The end of the hose must not touch the water in the receptor, so that a backed-up receptor cannot siphon dirty water into the machine. The sizing rule is a gap twice the diameter of the pipe: for a 3/4-inch hose, roughly an inch and a half. The provision is FBC-P 802.3.1.
The discharge must not create a nuisance. Draining onto a street or an alley in a way that causes a problem is not allowed. HVAC tradespeople translate that into plain terms: not where somebody will slip, not against a foundation, not onto a roof.
One thing worth stating plainly. The condensate section of the code is written around evaporators and cooling coils, meaning HVAC equipment, and a plug-in portable dehumidifier is not named in it. The closer fit is Chapter 8 on indirect waste, which does list humidifiers and imposes the same requirement: protection against backflow, fouling and stoppage. How a portable unit gets treated is a call for the local building department, not a line you can quote.
Tying into the AC condensate line
The appeal is obvious. The line already exists and nobody has to drill the wall.
The method tradespeople describe: tee in downstream of the air handler’s existing P-trap. Not above it, and not dripping into the drain pan.
What goes wrong: one owner ran a dehumidifier hose into the open port of a condensate pump, came back a few days later and found water on the floor. The hose was interfering with the float switch, so the water came back out of the port instead of being pumped away.
The Florida-specific angle: an air conditioner and a dehumidifier on the same line means double the flow through a pipe that already clogs. A blocked condensate line is one of the leading causes of water damage in condos here.

Leaks are the most common theme, and what leaks is usually not the machine. It is the joint between hose and port: 3/4-inch garden hose thread, plastic, a forgotten washer, or a fitting cranked until it cracked. Hand tight plus a quarter turn.
The second mechanism is a hose tip left sitting in water. That creates back pressure, water comes back up the line, a puddle appears under the unit, and the machine gets blamed.
Biofilm and mosquitoes: the Florida part
The hose grows a lining. A machine that runs year round keeps the hose warm and damp, biofilm builds, and the bore narrows. Clear hose grows it faster than opaque, because light feeds algae. Hence the rule: use black hose.
Flush it periodically. Service companies suggest monthly as a working interval. What to flush with is not settled: some recommend white vinegar, others diluted bleach, and some manufacturers prohibit bleach because of the plastics. Vinegar is the gentler of the two.
An outdoor discharge must not stand. Mosquitoes need no more water than sits in a bottle cap, and the run from egg to biting adult takes about five days at the right temperature. Terminate the hose on a slope or onto a splash block, never into a low spot.
Coil frost, which occupies half of the drainage advice written up north, is not a consideration here.
Pumps
A pump is what you use when nothing sits lower than the port, or when the run is too long to keep falling the whole way.
Common residential condensate pumps lift roughly 15 to 22 feet. The Little Giant VCMA-15 is rated at 15 feet and carries a built-in check valve, the VCMA-20 at 20 feet, and the Diversitech ULTRACP-22 at 22 feet.
What fails: running dry destroys the seals; a float switch fouled with slime stops triggering; and a check valve stuck open lets water run back, which is what people usually mistake for a dead pump.
A built-in pump raises the price of the machine, while an external one is cheaper and gets replaced on its own. Whether a given model has one is a question for the product listing, because the federal ENERGY STAR register carries no such field. Garages and condos
Garage. There is usually no plumbing nearby. The standard fix among Florida owners on the forums is either a hole through the wall or a condensate pump. Water crossing the apron onto a shared driveway runs into both the nuisance limit and the association’s rules. In our garage cohort, hoses come up in 22.3% of reviews against 12.4% elsewhere, covered on the garage page.
Condo. No statewide rule forbids draining off a balcony, but common elements, the neighbour below and the association’s documents turn it into a question of approval. Penetrating an exterior wall almost always requires permission. Drainage in a condo is no sharper a problem than in a house: full tank comes up in 6.5% against 6.0%, as covered on the condo page.
Dehumidifier drain hose setup, step by step
Remove the plug from the port, or the water routes straight back into the bucket.
Check the washer inside the coupling. That is where leaks start.
Find a point below the port: a shower pan, the low point of a standpipe, an outdoor discharge. If there is no such point, gravity is off the table.
Run the hose downhill along its whole length, with no loops or sags. Any loop rising above the port stops the flow.
Leave a gap at the end. Do not let it sit in water.
Watch under the machine for the first day after connecting.
Flush the hose monthly.
