50-Pint Dehumidifiers: The Ceiling of the Portable Class
A 50 pint dehumidifier is the upper limit of what gets certified in the portable class. Not the middle of a range between 35 and 70, which is how national roundups present it: under the DOE test procedure, 70-pint portables do not exist. The federal ENERGY STAR registry lists 511 portable models, and not one is rated above 50.0 pints per day. Above that mark the list is empty.
Why 50.0 is the ceiling
The pints on the carton and the pints in the registry are measured under different conditions. Manufacturers quote collection at 95 °F and 90% relative humidity, a tropical saturation point. DOE tests at 65 °F and 60% under 10 CFR Part 430, Appendix X1. The same machine produces numbers that differ by several times depending on which condition you pick.
A verified example from the registry: the Waykar PD160B-PRO is sold as a 34-pint unit, measured at 95 °F / 90% RH. Its certified capacity is 10.16 pints per day. Model codes tell a similar story. Records numbered SDZ1-150P and CHWA150A carry 150 in the model number and are certified at 50.0 and 49.67 pints per day respectively.
The practical rule is short. If a portable unit is advertised above 50 pints, the seller is not quoting DOE. Models can only be compared against each other on the DOE figure, because that is the one number measured the same way for everyone. Both test methods are explained on the pint ratings page.
Who needs this class
The class is chosen on whether the machine can keep up with a continuous moisture load, not on how much it collects in one go. In Florida a dehumidifier does not switch off for the season, and the review data shows what that does: owners here report a full tank twice as often as owners in other states, 13.0% of reviews against 6.5%.
The 50-pint class earns its place when:
- the floor plan is open, with a living room and kitchen sharing one volume of air
- construction is drying out after a leak or a flood
- the space is a garage, a workshop or a storage room on an exterior wall

What matters here is bigger than the individual rows. The Yoau/Shinco/UHOME filer submitted one machine under twelve model codes, among them YDZ-50P/S6, YDA-50P/S6, YDN-50P/6, SDZ1-150P and UDZ1-150P, all carrying identical figures of 50.0 pints, an IEF of 2.02 and 475 kWh a year. Two codes stand in the table as representatives. Buying the different-looking units from that family means buying one design under different names.

What to compare once capacity is fixed
Drainage. With capacity identical across the class, this is the first thing to look at rather than an optional extra. Florida owners mention a built-in pump less often than owners elsewhere, 0.9% of reviews against 1.4%, while complaining about a full tank twice as often. Electricity. At equal capacity, annual consumption in this class runs from 475 to 530 kWh. Fifty-five kilowatt-hours a year is a small gap on its own. It accumulates here because the machine runs all year rather than for three months.
Refrigerant. R-32 dominates the class, at a global warming potential of 675. The registry lists the type and the charge for every model. It changes nothing about how the unit performs and something about servicing and disposal.

Where the class runs out
