Pint figures use the current post-2019 test procedure (a modern “50-pint” unit equals an old-label “70-pint”). Among 511 portable dehumidifiers in the federal ENERGY STAR register, none is rated above 50.0 pints per day, so the portable scale stops there. A dehumidifier bought the wrong size is the most common, and most expensive, mistake. Too small, it runs around the clock, never reaches your target humidity, wears out early, and uses more electricity than a properly sized unit. So it is worth a minute to get it right.

What “Pints” Mean, and Why the Numbers Confuse People

A dehumidifier’s capacity is measured in pints per day: how much water it pulls from the air in 24 hours under standard test conditions. More pints, more aggressive drying.

But here is the catch that trips up anyone who has bought one before. In 2019 the test conditions changed. Pints used to be measured at 80°F, now at 65°F, closer to the mild conditions the regulator settled on. Warm air holds more water, so under the old test a unit “removed” more and earned a higher number. Under the new one, the same hardware is labeled 30–45% lower. In plain terms, an old “70-pint” dehumidifier is today’s “50-pint.” The machine did not get weaker; the scale changed.

There is a second thing worth knowing before you shop. We pulled the federal register of ENERGY STAR certified dehumidifiers, 535 models in all. Among the 511 portable units in it, not one is rated above 50.0 pints per day under the current procedure. Exactly 32 sit at 50.0, and above that there is nothing. Yet listings advertising 70 and even 95 pints are everywhere.

Part of that gap is a difference in class. Real 70-pint-plus machines exist, but they are whole-home and crawl space units: a separate certified category of 24 models reaching 172 pints per day, ducted or hard-mounted, at a different price. For the portable boxes sitting next to a “50-pint” on the shelf, the bigger number is a different test: the pre-2019 method, or conditions warmer and wetter than the federal one. The number is real, it just answers a different question. When you compare two units, check that both figures come from the same test. The Two Numbers You Need

Area. The square footage of the space you are drying. That is the base.

How damp it is. Four levels, and it is not a guess but a read on the signs:

  • Moderately damp — the air feels damp and smells musty in summer, but no spots. About 50–60% humidity.
  • Very damp — a persistent damp smell, spots on walls or the ceiling. 60–70%. For a Florida home this is usually the starting point.
  • Wet — condensation on windows, clammy surfaces. 70–80%.
  • Extremely wet — standing water, seepage, or after a leak.

A ceiling higher than the standard 8 feet adds air volume, and so more moisture, which the calculator accounts for with its own field. And the “frequent extra moisture” checkbox (laundry, bathroom, kitchen) adds margin: those rooms put water into the air every day.

When One Portable Is Not Enough

Past roughly 1,500 square feet of damp space, or any crawl space job, the answer stops being a bigger portable, because a bigger certified portable does not exist. That territory belongs to whole-home and crawl space dehumidifiers: units from makers like AprilAire, Santa Fe and AlorAir that mount in the space or tie into ductwork, drain by hose or pump as a matter of course, and carry certified capacities from the mid-fifties up to 172 pints per day. They cost more and they are an installation rather than a purchase, but they are the honest match for a large or structurally damp space — not a pair of portables leapfrogging each other. The calculator switches its recommendation to this class automatically when the load calls for it.

Which Type of Dehumidifier You Need in Florida

Size is half the decision. The other half is the type, and for Florida the answer is simple but worth spelling out.

Refrigerant (compressor) is what you want. It works like a refrigerator: it pulls humid air across a cold coil, the moisture condenses out, and dry air returns to the room. It is efficient, handles large volumes, and is the standard for homes. It has one weakness, below about 65°F it loses capacity and can frost over. But in Florida that is exactly not your problem: it is warm year round here, and a compressor unit is always in its working range.

The review data says the same thing. Across 62,317 dehumidifier reviews we sorted from a public research dataset, frost comes up in 1.5% of reviews nationally and only 0.9% of reviews that mention Florida. It is the one complaint where this state sits below the national rate. Anti-frost is a real feature, it is just not the one that should decide your purchase here.

Desiccant units are for cold spaces: an unheated garage, a cabin, the northern states in winter. They do not mind the cold, but they remove less water and use more energy. In Florida there is no reason to pay for that, the conditions they are built for do not occur here.

Peltier (thermoelectric) units are the small, quiet boxes that pull well under two pints a day. In the same review data, Florida owners rate them 4.36 out of 5 against 4.66 for compressor units, and the share of one- and two-star reviews runs two and a half times higher. The pattern in what people write is clear enough: these work in a closet, a bathroom, or an RV, and they do not keep up with a room. Their one genuine advantage is silence, and that matters more here than most places, since noise is the single most common complaint Florida owners make about compressor units.

The short version: for a home or apartment in Florida, get a refrigerant unit of the right size. Leave desiccant and Peltier to cold garages and small enclosed spaces.

Tank, Drainage, and Noise

Three practical details decide how livable the unit is day to day.

Tank and drainage. A dehumidifier drains water into a tank, and the tank has to be emptied. In Florida, where the unit runs for months with barely a pause, the tank fills fast. In the review data, Florida owners mention the tank almost twice as often as owners elsewhere, and they describe emptying it daily or twice daily more than three times as often.

The obvious fix is a hose for continuous drainage, and here Florida homes hit a wall that northern advice never mentions. Gravity drainage needs a drain point below the unit, which in a northern house means the floor drain in the basement. Florida homes are built on slab. There is no floor drain, so gravity has nowhere to send the water except a shower pan or an exterior wall. That is why a built-in condensate pump matters more here than anywhere else: it lifts the water up and into a sink. Curiously, it is the feature Florida reviewers mention least often, which is probably why so many of them are still carrying buckets.

Noise. If the dehumidifier will sit in a bedroom or nursery, check the noise level, comfortable models run around 35–40 dB. This deserves more weight in Florida than elsewhere: the machine here does not switch off for the season, and noise is the most frequent complaint in Florida reviews, at 15.6% against 9.9% nationally. Six weeks of a loud fan is tolerable. Twelve months of it is not.

Why You Size Up in Florida

The rating on the box comes from a lab at 65°F and 60% relative humidity. A Florida living room in August is nothing like that, and the difference does not run the way most people assume: warmer, wetter air gives a dehumidifier more water to condense, not less. A properly working unit in a Florida summer will usually pull more than its label, not less.

So sizing up here is not about compensating for a weak machine. It is about duty. In the south of the state and the Keys the air barely lets go all year, so the unit works for months rather than in bursts. A machine sized with no margin runs continuously at full tilt, which is exactly the condition that wears a compressor out and drives the noise complaints above. One sized with headroom cycles on and off, lasts longer, and holds humidity more steadily.

What to Do With the Result

The goal is to hold the home around 50% relative humidity. The EPA recommends a 30–50% range; there is no point driving below 45%, you just burn electricity with no health benefit. If the unit has a humidistat, you set the percentage and it switches itself on and off to hold the level.

Two rules beyond size:

  • Source first, dehumidifier second. If water is getting into the home, a leak, condensation, a crack, no dehumidifier will outrun it. Fix the cause first.
  • Measure the real humidity. A cheap hygrometer for a couple of dollars shows you what you actually have, and pins down the dampness level for the calculator better than a guess.
