20-Pint Dehumidifiers: A Class Built to the Minimum
A 20 pint dehumidifier belongs to the smallest compressor class, and the class is built differently from the larger ones. The difference is not the amount of water. Units at or below 25 pints per day are held to their own, lower efficiency threshold, and the federal ENERGY STAR registry shows what that produces: most models in the class sit exactly on the certification minimum of 1.70 L/kWh and not a hundredth above it.
Why this class has its own bar
ENERGY STAR sets the efficiency threshold for portable dehumidifiers by capacity band. Under the Version 6.0 requirements in force since 1 October 2025, a unit rated at 25.00 pints per day or below has to reach an integrated energy factor of 1.70 L/kWh. From 25.01 to 50 pints the bar rises to 2.01. The small class is allowed to be less efficient per litre of water than the big one.
Look at what manufacturers do with that. In the registry a large share of models in this class carry an IEF of exactly 1.70. Not 1.72, not 1.68, but the precise number below which certification is refused. The design clears the bar and stops there.
Which is why the spread inside the class is wider than the capacity figures suggest. Annual consumption runs from 249 to 314 kWh and IEF from 1.70 to 2.05. Units at 2.05 exist. They are scarce, and nothing on the shelf marks them out.
How the pint number itself is arrived at is covered on the pint ratings page.
Who this class is for
One room: a bedroom, an office, a nursery, a studio, a small condo. A 20 pint dehumidifier is sized for holding humidity in a volume where a larger machine would cost more in noise and electricity without doing more useful work.
One Florida caveat, and it is about runtime rather than size. The unit here does not switch off for the season, so the tank keeps filling: Florida owners report a full tank twice as often as owners in other states, 13.0% of reviews against 6.5%, and mention a built-in pump least of all, 0.9% against 1.4%. Work out how the water leaves the machine before you buy, not after.
Where the class runs short: two rooms or more, an open plan, drying out after a leak. That is 35-pint and 50-pint ground. Size it properly with the Florida dehumidifier calculator.
A closet, a bathroom or an RV is a separate case. A compressor unit is more machine than those spaces need, and the comparison between the two device types sits in the Florida scorecard.

ENERGY STAR registry export 28 July 2026, individual records re-checked 30 July 2026. Capacity per DOE Appendix X1 at 65 °F / 60% RH. IEF is the integrated energy factor: litres of water removed per kilowatt-hour. Discontinued models are not included.
Top and bottom of that table differ by about 21% in efficiency at nearly identical capacity. The Hisense ADH25K26 collects 24.89 pints for 314 kWh a year; the AeroNova ADC018 collects 24.50 pints for 257 kWh. Fifty-seven kilowatt-hours a year for the same work.
What to compare besides the number on the box
IEF, not capacity. Capacities in this class are squeezed into a narrow band between 20 and 25 pints, so there is little to choose between them. Efficiency varies far more. The registry publishes IEF for every model, and it is the one column where the difference shows.
Who filed the certification. Multi-brand families operate here as well: the same machine at 24.50 pints and an IEF of 2.05 is filed under both AeroNova and Avylo by one company. Who files under which name is mapped in the ENERGY STAR registry breakdown.
Refrigerant. Alongside R-32, this class often uses R-290, which is propane, at a global warming potential of 3 against 675 for R-32. The registry lists the type and the charge for every model.
What the registry does not carry. Noise, tank volume, build quality. Those come from reviews and the product listing.
Frequently asked questions
What room size does a 20-pint dehumidifier cover?
The class is sized for a single room. Work from floor area and how much moisture enters the space, because in Florida that load runs higher than national sizing tables assume.
Why do most 20-pint dehumidifiers have the same efficiency rating?
Because 1.70 L/kWh is the ENERGY STAR minimum for portable units at or below 25 pints per day, and most models are built to meet it exactly. Units at 1.95 to 2.05 exist but are uncommon.
How much electricity does a 20-pint dehumidifier use?
Registry figures run from 249 to 314 kWh a year. At nearly identical capacity, the gap between the extremes reaches 57 kWh.
Is a 20-pint dehumidifier enough for Florida?
For one room, yes, provided drainage is sorted out first. The machine runs year round here, so the tank fills continuously rather than seasonally.
Should I get a 20-pint dehumidifier or a mini one?
A 20-pint compressor unit is built for a room; a mini is built for a closet or a bathroom, where collection is measured in hundreds of millilitres a day. They are different jobs rather than different sizes.
