Why 85% outdoors and 50% indoors is not a contradiction

In the NOAA station records we analysed for five Florida metros, morning relative humidity runs 80 to 88% and afternoon humidity 60 to 65%. People read those numbers in a forecast, set the machine to 50, and expect it to grind away against “85% outside”.

But a percentage is relative. It expresses how much water the air holds against the maximum it could hold at its own temperature, and warmer air holds more. So the outdoor figure swings through the day while the amount of water stays the same: 85% at dawn, 62% by mid-afternoon, identical moisture. This is why our research measures the state by dew point instead, which sits at 73 to 75 °F across the major metros through the summer.

Indoors the temperature is different and nearly constant, because the air conditioner holds 74 to 78 °F. At that temperature, 50% is a specific and reachable quantity of water. The machine is not working against the outdoor percentage. It is working against the moisture that gets inside. The target indoors and the number outdoors belong to different coordinate systems.

Where the 50% comes from

EPA guidance for homes is to keep relative humidity below 60%, ideally between 30 and 50%. The 60% line is not a matter of taste: above it, mould establishes on damp organic material within 24 to 48 hours. The full range is set out on the ideal home humidity page.

For Florida the working edge of that range is the top of it, for two reasons.

Going lower is possible and costs more. Every percentage point down is extra compressor time in a climate where the machine already never stops for the season. A unit chasing 40% runs longer than one holding 50, and between 40 and 50 there is no difference for protecting the house, because the mould threshold is 60.

30% is neither reachable nor needed here. The lower half of the EPA range was written for the heating season in northern states, where indoor air dries out on its own. A Florida house will not be pulled down to 30% by a domestic machine, and there is no reason to try.

So 50% is the point where the house is protected and the compressor is not working for nothing. If someone in the household has asthma or allergies and a doctor advises drier air, 45% is the next sensible step.

The same setting means different things in different rooms

The dial sets the humidity where the machine stands. Everything after that needs adjusting.

Bedroom. Hold the same 50%, and keep the noise in mind: in our review slice, 19.3% of bedroom reviews complain about noise against 6.2% of the rest. The lower the setting, the more hours the compressor runs next to the bed. Covered on the bedroom page.

Garage. A target percentage is not held there at all: every time the door goes up the outdoor air comes in and the machine starts over. Set 50 to 55% and arrange continuous drainage; the job is keeping moisture from accumulating between openings. Covered on the garage page.

Closet, bathroom, pantry. Enclosed spaces run their own humidity, and a machine in the living room does not reach them. Those need their own small unit or an absorber.

The display and your hygrometer will disagree. That is not a fault. The unit’s sensor reads the air entering the machine, while a hygrometer reads the air wherever it happens to sit, so the two are honestly measuring different air. Built-in humidistats are also built to a tolerance of roughly ±5% RH, deliberately, so the unit does not switch on and off around the setpoint. How to tell the setting is right

Not by feel and not by the display. By three signs over a week of watching.

A separate hygrometer in the living area holds 45 to 55% around the clock. Morning peaks after showers and cooking fall back on their own within an hour or two. And the machine cycles, switching on and off, rather than running continuously for days.

If it runs without stopping and never catches the setting, either it is undersized for the area or moisture is arriving faster than it can remove it.
