Working out the dehumidifier electricity cost in Florida takes different arithmetic than it does up north, because the machine here does not switch off for the season. Annual consumption across certified portable models runs from 105 to 530 kWh in the federal register, with a median of 340. Where the number comes from
The ENERGY STAR register publishes annual energy consumption in kilowatt-hours for every certified model. It is a calculated figure under the DOE method, not a reading from your meter: it makes models comparable under identical conditions, and it does not predict your bill. Read it this way: the class sets the order of magnitude, and there is still spread inside each class. In the largest class the spread is narrow, 471 to 530 kWh. In the smallest it looks eightfold, but the top of that range rests on a single record: DEVERSE D025H-25Pt3 at 886 kWh on a capacity of 24.93 pints. Other models at the same capacity and the same efficiency sit near 280. That looks like an error in one filing, and which figure is the correct one does not follow from the register.

Which rate to use
Take the exact figure from your own bill. Florida has 36 electricity providers and the rate depends on whose service area you are in.
For orientation: EIA puts the state’s average residential rate at 15.38 cents per kWh for its April 2026 reporting month. At Florida Power & Light, the largest provider, the typical 1,000 kWh bill from 1 January 2026 is $136.64, which works out to roughly 13.7 cents all in. Across the state the range runs about 13 to 16 cents.
Florida sits below the national level of roughly 18.8 cents. Household consumption here runs well above the national average because of year-round cooling, so the bill itself is not small.
Why the Florida arithmetic is different
Northern write-ups count a season, so the dehumidifier electricity cost they quote covers three or four months of running with the machine idle the rest of the year. Multiply that by four and you have the Florida picture.
Which inverts the usual reasoning at the point of purchase. Fifty kilowatt-hours a year between two models looks like nothing in the shop, and it is a gap that repeats every year the machine is alive. Between the thriftiest and the hungriest model in the largest class the difference is 59 kWh a year; between the 45-to-50 class and the up-to-25 class it is around 240.

What actually lowers the bill
IEF rather than capacity. The integrated energy factor states how many litres of water the machine removes per kilowatt-hour. The ENERGY STAR minimum is 1.70 L/kWh up to 25 pints and 2.01 from 25.01 to 50. Most models are built to sit exactly on that threshold, so the ones above it stand out immediately.
The setpoint. Every percentage point lower is more compressor hours. The working target for living space is 50%, and going below that makes sense on medical advice, as covered on the humidity setting page.
The right size. A machine that cycles costs less than one that runs continuously and never catches up.
