The short answer this haier dehumidifier review exists to give: the brand is still on the US market, but as a closing 2019 to 2020 line. New models from the same company now carry the GE name.

I did not test the unit. What follows comes from 586 owner reviews, the ENERGY STAR register, the CPSC recall database and a Department of Energy ruling.

What happened to the brand

The manufacturer’s site lists four Haier dehumidifiers: QDHR20LZ, QDHR35LZ, QDHR50LZ and the QPHR50LZ with a pump. Three are marked as no longer manufactured; the fourth shows as out of stock online.

In the ENERGY STAR certified product register, every Haier-branded model belongs to the 2019 to 2020 certification wave. The 2021, 2022 and 2023 certifications from the same applicant were filed under the GE name instead.

The applicant is one and the same: GE Appliances, a Haier Company. Haier completed its purchase of GE Appliances on 6 June 2016 for 5.6 billion dollars.

The accurate wording is this: the brand has not been withdrawn, retail listings are still alive, but it is not being developed either. Inside one group it has given way to GE.

The compact model is the same machine GE sells

Haier QDHR20LZ and GE ADHL22LA appear in the register as one entry: 22.23 pints per day under Appendix X1, 1.57 litres per kilowatt hour.

In the smallest class the buyer is choosing between two labels on one machine. For the larger sizes there is no such confirmation: Appendix X1 figures under the Haier name are not recorded in the register, and I will not reconstruct them from a neighbouring model.

What this haier dehumidifier review found in the reviews

Haier accounts for 586 reviews across 33 listings in the core sample, which is below the 700 review threshold I set for the published brand table. The core sample itself is 62,317 reviews of 711 compressor household dehumidifiers, described on a separate page.

The share of one and two star reviews is 34.98 percent. Across the rest of the sample it is 17.5 percent, and for GE it is 34.0 percent. A shared owner does not make machines identical. I leave that closeness as an observation rather than a conclusion about shared engineering.

The age of the sample matters more. Reviews peak in 2017 at 88, then fall away: 52, 44, 47, 43, 29, and three in 2023. The models behind them are labelled 30, 32, 45 and 65 pints, which is pre-2019 marking. Since 13 June 2019 the Appendix X1 procedure has applied, market classes shifted, and the ceiling for a portable unit became 50.0 pints. Our page on pint ratings covers that change.

Noise is the theme its neighbours do not have

Noise comes up close to twice as often as across the category, and it holds up in low ratings at 22.0 percent of them. Neither the Midea Cube, nor Frigidaire, nor GE put noise that high. Drainage runs the other way, below category level: these machines had no pump, so there was nothing to discuss.

A published figure exists for one model only: the QDHR35LZ at 47 dBA on low and 50 dBA at maximum, from the manufacturer’s own store catalogue. For the rest of the line dB(A) is not published.

Those 22.5 percent of mentions cannot be tied to a decibel figure. One measures text, the other measures a machine.

Two different recall stories

Haier was not part of CPSC recall 17-024, the November 2016 action covering roughly 3.4 million units built by GD Midea.

Haier was part of a different one: recall 21-174 of 4 August 2021, covering units built by New Widetech, for overheating and fire. The campaign covered about 2 million units with 107 incidents and around 17 million dollars in property damage. Under the Haier name about 30,750 units were recalled: models HEN70ETFP, HEN70ETFP-E, HM50EP and HM70EP, manufactured before 1 September 2017. Our recall research page covers the wider picture.

The models in our review cohort are not part of that campaign; the series do not match.

The Department of Energy penalty

One model from the cohort ran into a regulatory decision of a different kind.

In February 2019 the US Department of Energy issued a non-compliance determination on the DM32EK, case 2018-SE-36003. Four tested units returned 29.68, 29.28, 29.76 and 29.87 pints per day at efficiencies of 1.09, 1.14, 1.22 and 1.25 litres per kilowatt hour, against a minimum of 1.35 for units up to 35 pints per day. The penalty was 4 million dollars, ordered on 6 May 2022.

This is an energy efficiency case, not a fire safety one. It should not be merged with recall 21-174.

What to buy instead

The same applicant covers every class under the GE name, and the compact GE unit is the same machine the compact Haier was. Coverage figures on listings are a starting point, not a calculation: for a real match, our sizing calculator accounts for humidity and how the room is used.

What this means in Florida

A dehumidifier here gets no dead season: drainage is settled before the purchase, and coil frost drops off the checklist. In the Haier cohort frost appears in 2.0 percent of reviews against 1.6 across the category, which is no difference worth acting on. If the brand matters to you and you find remaining stock, check two things before ordering. First, whether continuous drainage is available, because this line had no pump. Second, the published noise figure, which the manufacturer gives for one model only.

What this analysis does not show

The unit was not tested. The findings come from owner reviews, the ENERGY STAR register, the CPSC database and Department of Energy rulings.

The cohort is 586 reviews, below the threshold for the published brand table. The direction of the numbers holds; their precision does not.

Reviews are not a random sample of owners: they are written by people who decided to write. The share of low ratings is not the share of failures.

Appendix X1 figures for the 35 and 50 pint Haier models are not recorded in the register under that brand. The values of neighbouring GE models are not assigned to them.

An independent noise measurement of the QDHR50LZ exists but sits behind a paywall, so no figure is quoted here.
